| Description: | Near Brein Phort, north of Loch Tarbert, west coast of Jura, Argyllshire. Shingle bank on raised beach. Shingle bank in middle distance rests on the 30.5 m. (100 ft.) raised beach at top of quartzite cliff. This is the High Rock Platform present around many of the southern Inner Hebrides and demonstrates its highly planar nature. The pebbles consist almost entirely of quartzite, a very hard rock with almost nothing in the way of plant nutrients. This might explain why the shingle is still free from vegetation cover, despite having been exposed to weathering for thousands of years. Paps of Jura in the distance. The High Rock Platform is very well displayed on Jura. From the evidence of striae and glacial deposits found in some localities, the platform was originally thought to be pre-glacial in origin. However, current views are less certain and it has been suggested to represent an inter-glacial feature. |
