| Description: | Souh of Allt Bun an Eas, south of Loch Tarbert, west cost of Jura, Argyllshire. A swarm of basalt dykes forming stacks on the modern and 7.6 m. (25 ft.) raised beach. Some parts of the dyke in the centre ground are obviously very resistant to erosion, forming sharp pinnacles of basalt. The higher parts of this dyke appear to be breaking up, along joints, into large blocks of basalt. Sea stacks are formed on rocky shorelines when resistant rock units become isolated by erosion of the softer rocks surrounding them. Since dykes are generally more resistant to erosion that their country rocks, they are often found forming sea stacks, both modern and ancient. |
