Description: | Penton Linns, Liddel Water, 4.0 km. east-north-east of Canonbie, Dumfries & Galloway, with steeply-dipping succession of Carboniferous limestones and shales. This part of the Liddel Water displays one of the best sections through the Carboniferous rocks in the district. Steeply-dipping limestones (Lower Carboniferous Border Group). The limestones form harder beds which stand up to erosion whereas the intervening more shaly units are more easily eroded and are here underwater. These limestones were laid down during Carboniferous times when the British Isles had a tropical climate with extensive fringing shallow seas. Limestone reefs flourished with a rich shelly fauna of brachiopods and corals. |
