Description: | Salisbury Craigs, Arthur's Seat (from the south-east), Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Midlothian. Dolerite sill forming escarpment. This is one of the best-known geological views in Scotland and shows a sill of teschenitic dolerite overlying early Carboniferous sandstones and marls. It forms a classical eastwards-dipping escarpment feature which is eroding back, giving rise to vertical cliffs with a loose talus slope of fallen debris in front. Salisbury Craigs form only part of the ancient Arthur's Seat volcano which erupted in early Carboniferous times about 325 million years ago. The nearby feature of Samson's Ribs illustrates columnar jointing within a dolerite intrusion originally intruded deep within the volcano. |
