Description: | Coast at The Whilk, 1.6 km. south-west of Lendalfoot, Ayrshire. Looking north-east with Pinbain Hill in centre distance. Dolerite dykes forming old sea stacks on raised beach. Dolerite dykes, intrusive in serpentine of Ordovician age (Ballantrae Complex), and standing out as fossil sea stacks on postglacial raised beach. Note small, irregular, but highly productive fields which are typical of this strip between the present beach and the cliffs of the raised beach. The intrusions in this area are dolerite dykes which include examples of Ordovician age and much younger ones of Tertiary age, all intrusive into Ordovician serpentinite of the Ballantrae Complex. |
