Description: | Riera Geo, 6.8 km. south of Wick, looking inland. 'Geo' formed along a crush in the Sarclet Sandstone. Shows well the crumbling down of a cliff by jointing (cf. photo C1643 looking seawards). This geo has been eroded by the sea in well-jointed siltstones and mudstones of the Braemore Mudstone Formation (Sarclet Group, Lower Devonian). Bedding is horizontal and subvertical joints at right angles to each other provide preferred planes of splitting. The long axis of the geo is parallel to an east-north-east-trending fault about 50 m. south of the geo which faults the Braemore Mudstone down against sandstones of the Ousdale Arkose Formation. The rock between the two master joints is somewhat shattered, and more closely jointed than that forming cliffs. |
