Description: | Riera Geo, 6.8 km. south of Wick, looking seawards, Caithness. 'Geo' formed along a crush in the Sarclet Sandstone. Shows well the crumbling down of a cliff by jointing (cf. photo C01644 looking inland). This geo has been eroded by the sea in well-jointed siltstones and mudstones of the Braemore Mudstone Formation (Sarclet Group, Lower Devonian). Bedding is horizontal and subvertical joints at right-angles to each other provide preferred planes of splitting. The long axis of the geo is parallel to an east-north-east-trending fault about 50 m. south of the geo which faults the Braemore Mudstone down against sandstones of the Ousdale Arkose Formation. Note natural arch on left. |
