Description: | Tod's Gote, 6.0 km. south of Wick, Caithness. Cliffs of mudstone. The covering of glacial till is removed from the top of the headland. This geo has been eroded by the sea in well-jointed siltstones and mudstones of the Braemore Mudstone Formation (Sarclet Group, Lower Devonian). Bedding is horizontal and subvertical joints at right-angles to each other provide preferred planes of splitting. The long axis of the geo is parallel to an east-north-east-trending fault which runs along the south side of the geo, and throws down to the north within the Braemore Mudstone Formation. The fairly thin till cover over bedrock thins gradually towards the base of the cliff, due to erosion by wind and spray. |
