Description: | Groverake Mine, Rookhope, Weardale, Co. Durham. Looking SE. Surface installations at Groverake Mine. The tall headframe on the right is over the Old Whimsey Shaft which provides the main access to the mine. It is sunk to the 80-fathom level and is equipped with cage and skip winding. The headframe of the old Drawing Shaft is to the left of the picture. This is sunk to the 50-fathom level and in recent years has served as an alternative exit from the mine. The heapstead buildings of the Firestone Incline may be seen behind the Drawing Shaft headframe. Fluorspar is worked from the Groverake Vein. |
