| Description: | Sandside Head, at the north-west corner of Sandside Bay, Reay, Caithness. Flagstones with seaward dip giving rise to overhanging cliff. On right - surf erosion on cliff top. Flaggy siltstones with thin calcareous laminated beds were deposited under lacustrine conditions in the Middle Devonian. At Sandside Head, they were relatively near the edge of the lake, and sandy beds occur locally. The seaward dip of the strata, combined with poor jointing perpendicular to bedding, has produced overhanging cliffs where the lower rocks have been undercut by wave action. In places the waves have been high enough to remove soil and vegetation from the tops of the cliffs. |
