| Description: | Terrace and abandoned cliff of the postglacial raised beach. In the foreground a stack of white quartzite separated from the cliff at the period of formation of the raised beach. Bedrock in foreground is Jura Quartzite (Islay Subgroup, Argyll Group, Dalradian Supergroup). In the bay and on the headland beyond the less resistant underlying Bonahaven Dolomite Formation, consisting of metamorphosed dolomitic limestone, sandstone and siltstone is exposed. The regional dip is about 20 degrees to the south (left). The grassed area below the cliffs is a platform occupied by the sea during early postglacial times, when sea level was up to 14 m. higher than at present. At that time the quartzite stack in the foreground was surrounded by the sea at high tide. |
