Description: | Shore west of Dunbar, East Lothian. Stacks of volcanic agglomerate in large vent. West of Dunbar, a roughly circular volcanic vent c. 1 km. in diameter crops out on the foreshore. It is filled with agglomerate of basaltic composition. Being more resistant than the surrounding sedimentary rocks, the rocks of the vents are well exposed along the coast. The agglomerate is poorly jointed and typically weathers into stacks and pinnacles with rounded surfaces. Note angular fragments of basalt standing proud of the matrix of the agglomerate. The vent cuts through sandstones with thin cornstone beds belonging to the Kinnesswood Formation (latest Devonian to earliest Carboniferous). The vent is probably of late Carboniferous or early Permian age. |
