Description: | East of Tantallon Castle, 5 km. east of North Berwick, East Lothian. Cliff of fine tuff, showing faults. Tantallon Castle in background. Subhorizontally-bedded basaltic tuffs of the Garleton Hills Volcanic Formation (Strathclyde Group, Visean). The unit at the base of the cliff is very massive and poorly bedded, in contrast to the rather thinly-bedded tuffs forming the rest of the cliff. A small fault, dipping steeply to the left, throws down the strata to the left with a displacement of c. 0.5 m. A short distance to the west (behind cliff) the Garleton Hills volcanic rocks are faulted against mudstones and sandstones of the Ballagan Formation, which at the coast are intruded by two volcanic vents. In the distance, Tantallon Castle, an ancient monument open to the public is built of red Devonian sandstone and conglomerate. |
