Description: | Tantallon Castle, 4.5 km. east of North Berwick, East Lothian. Looking east. Cliffs of tuff and agglomerate: wedge or false-bedded sandstone in cliff. The castle is built on a volcanic vent filled with basaltic agglomerate. However, sandstones of the Ballagan Formation (Inverclyde Group, Tournaisian) form the upper third of the cliff just to the left of the castle. The same rocks are also exposed at the foot of the cliffs to the shoreward of the cliffs. This indicates the extreme irregularity of the margins of many of the vents, which are of later Carboniferous to early Permian age. |
