Description: | Shore, west of St. Monance, Fifeshire. Stack of agglomerate capped with block of intrusive basalt. The Partan Craig volcanic vent about 1.5 km. south-west of St. Monance is about 300 m. in diameter. It is filled with agglomerate of basaltic composition. The agglomerate consists of angular blocks of basaltic rock set within a finer-grained basaltic matrix. The vent has been intruded by later basaltic material which is more resistant to weathering than the agglomerate which it has protected from weathering. Note basaltic blocks in the agglomerate, sharp contact of the overlying basalt, and closer joint spacing in the basalt. |
