Description: | Wemyss, Fifeshire. Ancient sea caves in cliff of sandstone at edge of raised beach. Foreground marks edge of postglacial raised beach, which is now grassed over. Cliff is made of soft sandstone within the Middle Coal Measures. Sandstone is thickly bedded, with traces of cross-bedding visible in some beds. Joints are widely spaced, and have been exploited by wave action to erode the caves. Behind cliff is platform forming part of late-glacial raised beach. |
