Description: | King's Cave, 1.5 km. north of Drumadoon, south-west Arran, Buteshire. Old sea caves cut in cliff of Triassic sandstone at edge of raised beach. Marine erosion during a period of high sea level shortly after the latest glaciation eroded the soft Permo-Triassic sandstone to form caves where King Robert Bruce is said to have sheltered. Note the large-scale dune cross-bedding in the sandstones. The caves are partly controlled by vertical jointing in the sandstones (right edge of photo). |
