Description: South-east end of Holy Island, Lamlash Bay, Arran, Buteshire. Quartz porphyry dyke cutting Triassic sandstone (below) and dolerite (above). The dyke, c. 5 metres wide, forms a prominent vertical cliff. The quartz porphyry is well-jointed both parallel and perpendicular to its contacts. The pale sandstone is thickly bedded, and dune cross-bedding is visible in places. Half-way up the picture, the sandstone is intruded by a sill of dolerite, showing spheroidal weathering at some levels. The contact is, as far as can be seen, parallel to the bedding in the sandstones.
