Description: | Coire Lair, Achnashellach, with Sgorr Ruadh in background, Ross & Cromarty. Glaciated surface of Torridonian sandstone. The large ice-smoothed surface of red, slightly pebbly Torridonian sandstone (Applecross Formation) contains many glacial striae, grooves cut in the rock by stones held by the ice while it was moving over the rock. On this surface they run from left to right across the photo. In the background is Sgorr Ruadh, which consists largely of Torridonian sandstone. A small outlier of Cambrian quartzite occurs just west (right) of the main summit. It forms the core of a syncline whose complementary anticline has been cut out by a thrust. |
