Description: | Smoo Cave, Leirinmore, Durness, Sutherland. Cliff of Cambrian dolomite with bands of chert. The Allt Smoo reaches the sea at the back of the cave. Subhorizontally-bedded fine-grained granular dolomite and white limestone of the Sangomore Formation (Lower Ordovician) with thin beds of chert forms the cliff. This is an area of karst topography where rainwater has dissolved the rock to form caves and sinkholes. |
