In the background the outskirts of Stanley and Annfield Plain stand on a ridge largely veneered by drift but underlain by some of the highest Westphalian Measures in western Durham and locally above the Ryhope Five-Quarter. In the centre the lower ground of the Houghwell Burn basin and along the line of a buried valley. On the right made ground adjacent to the old Engine Pit, Tanfield, may also be seen.
