Description: | River Derwent near Muggleswick. Derwent Valley near Muggleswick. Near the hamlet of Muggleswick, Co. Durham the River Derwent enters a series of deep meanders up to 61 m. (200 ft.) deep and cut into the country rock, here consisting of very gently dipping strata of high Namurian age. The above photograph shows the river near the entrance to the gorge and looking downstream from the Northumberland bank of the river east of Muggleswick. Bedrock forming the east bank hereabouts consists of strata between the Upper Felltop Limestone and the First Grit. (See also Photos. Nos. L1775 and L1776.) |
