Description: | River Derwent near Muggleswick. Derwent Valley near Muggleswick. Near the hamlet of Muggleswick, Co. Durham the River Derwent enters a series of deep incised meanders up to 61 m. (200 ft.) deep and cut into the country rock. The above photo shows the Derwent Valley looking upstream from near the entrance to the gorge and taken from the Northumberland bank of the river east of Muggleswick. The country rock consists of high Namurian strata between the Upper Felltop Limestone and the First Grit. (See also Photo. No. L1775.) |
