Description: | River Derwent Gorge near Muggleswick, Co. Durham. Incised meander on River Derwent, Co. Durham. Near the hamlet of Muggleswick, Co. Durham, the River Derwent has cut a series of deep incised meanders some 61 m. (200 ft.) deep through high Namurian strata including the 'First Grit' - this sandstone forms the bulk of the rim of the gorge on both the Northumberland and Durham sides of the river. This view is taken looking north-east across the river towards the Snape End spur. The greater part of the gorge is very heavily wooded. (See also Photos. Nos. L1763 and L1764.) |
