Massive, often false-bedded, predominantly coarse-grained sandstone of high Namurian age dipping gently downstream in the Derwent Valley adjacent to Shotley Grove Road. The sandstone constitutes part of what was termed the 'Second Grit' and lies immediately below the assumed position of the Quarterburn Marine Band. Photo taken from Co Durham bank of river.
