Description: | Quarry Burn, near Causey Arch. Massive sandstone, Causey Burn. The higher reaches of Causey Burn is cut into massive, variably, often false-bedded, medium to coarse-grained and coarse-grained Westphalian B sandstone and overlying the Durham Low Main Coal. Restoration work was being carried out on the adjacent Causey Arch (see scaffolding on left). This arch bridge, constructed during the 18th Century, is said to be the largest single span stone arch bridge in the country and crosses over the stream at 40 m. (130 ft.). It formerly carried coals to the Tyne. |
