Description: | This imposing 19th century Victorian mock castle at Alton is built high on sandstone cliffs above the River Churnet. The Triassic sandstone used for the castle was quarried from these same cliffs. The Churnet Valley at Alton is cut into sandstones of the Sherwood Sandstone Group (Permo-Triassic), and in this area the upper part of the sequence is strongly cemented by baryte and/or calcite giving rise to a line of crags on either side of the valley. This view shows Alton Castle standing on an almost vertical crag of hard sandstones. The castle is built of sandstones quarried from this succession close to the castle. The famous Victorian architect Augustus Welby Pugin, who with Charles Barry was responsible for building the Houses of Parliament in London, was commissioned to build this great house by the Earl of Shrewsbury. |
