Description: | Beside the Cheadle-Ashbourne road just E. of Threapwood, near Alton. Looking NNW. View across hummocky ground underlain by Hollington Sandstone, near Alton. The Hollington Sandstone (formerly Keuper Sandstone) unit of the Sherwood Sandstone Group (Permo-Triassic) typically weathers to form what have been described as 'nubbles' (Barrow 1903) or small hummocks and mounds. This is probably due to the irregular hardness of the sandstone combined with the presence of impersistent marl bands. The view shows this uneven type of landform with irregular ridges and mounds standing out from the hilltop. Barrow, G. 1903. The Geology of the Cheadle Coal Field. Mem. Geol. Surv. GB. |
