Description: | Old gravel quarry beside road, NW of Edlaston Hall near Ashbourne. Looking NW. Section in conglomerates and pebbly sandstones of the Sherwood Sandstone Group, Edlaston. The section shows a massive conglomerate bed containing a lenticular sandstone unit with gradational boundaries. The conglomerate is poorly-sorted and poorly-stratified, although a parallelism of some pebbles and cobbles with a sub-horizontal sandstone bed is apparent in part. Cobbles and pebbles up to 24 cm. maximum dimension are mainly of quartzite and quartz. The beds are regarded as the products of a high energy fluvial environment and belong to the Sherwood Sandstone Group of Permo-Triassic age. See also Photograph No. L1648 taken in the same quarry. |
