| Description: | Spittal Quarry, Caithness. Cut and stacked Caithness Flags 'Spittal Beds' ready for dispatch to customers. The flagstones are a fine-grained sandstone of Devonian age c. 370 million years old. The flags are first riven from the natural bedding by hammering in steel wedges, spaced 2.5-3 feet apart. When the bed is raised high enough a crowbar is inserted to finally release the block entirely. Subsequent splitting produced slabs of more manageable size. The blocks are then transported to the cutting sheds where they are cut using precision laser-guided saws to the required dimensions. Spittal flagstones were first discovered over 160 years ago and because of their durability and quality they have been exported to many parts of Scotland and England and as far as the continent, North America and Australia. |
