| Description: | Spittal Quarry, Caithness. Cut and stacked Caithness Flags 'Spittal Beds' ready for dispatch to customers. The flagstones are a fine-grained sandstone of Devonian age c. 370 million years old. The flags, to reach this stage, have undergone removal from the beds by splitting using wedges and depending on the thickness of the slab variously sized hammers; cutting to the sizes specified by the customer, sometimes with a template using a diamond circular saw and, if required, polishing. Spittal flagstones were first discovered over 160 years ago and because of their durability and quality they have been exported to many parts of Scotland and England and as far as the continent, North America and Australia. |
