Description: | Oblique aerial view of Harelawhill Limestone Quarry, Harelawhill, 4 km. north-east of Canonbie, Dumfries & Galloway. View from the east showing entrances to mines in the Lower Harelawhill Limestone, Upper Liddesdale Group, Dinantian, Carboniferous. The limestone is one of two thick Lower Carboniferous limestones that were worked in the area. It is well-bedded, grey and 15-20 feet thick in beds 4-12 inches thick. It was of excellent quality, 94.67 per cent calcium carbonate. The overburden consists of c. four feet of glacial drift. |
