| Description: | Volcaniclastic deposits of the Dinantian-aged Gowk Stane Member, Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation at Glen Water, 400 m. south-east of Laigh Overmuir Farm. The rocks are interbedded laminated siltstone and fine-grained sandstone with poorly sorted conglomeratic sandstone. The marked variations in bed thickness and abrupt bed terminations suggest erosion with draping above topography and channelised deposits. These are interpreted as chaotic lahar deposits interbedded with laminated overbank and channel edge deposits forming part of the sedimentary apron of a major trachytic volcanic centre. The rocks of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation are Dinantian (Carboniferous) in age and form a continuous outcrop north, south and west of Glasgow. Many of the volcanic centres were initiated in a shallow marine or coastal plain environment, however, in most areas the rapid accumulation of deposits created sub-aerial lava plateaux which then remained above sea level throughout the volcanic episode. |
