| Description: | Ashington Colliery. Pit head gear. This pit was one of the largest in the Northumberland Coalfield and employed a considerable number of men. Coal has been of prime importance in the industrial growth of the region. The size and layout of Ashington town with row after row of regular terraces reflects its importance. There were six stalls at the colliery the deepest of which reaches the Victorian seam at c. 316 m. below ground level. This colliery was closed by British Coal during 1988 for economic reasons. Ashington Colliery dates from 1867. It worked household and steam coal as well as fireclay. It worked a number of coal seams, High Main, Main, Yard, Five Quarter, Low Main, Bensham, Plessey, latterly the Three Quarter and Victoria. |
