The south face looking down on the stoop and room workings in the Carboniferous Great Seam Coal.The photograph also shows back-filled spoil in middle distance; and temporary spoil heap in far distance. The stoop and room workings are the remains of former underground mining that have become exposed during the current opencast workings. The rooms are the narrow roadways, the stoops the pillars of coal. There is often enough coal left in the pillars to make it economic to mine by modern opencast methods. |
