Description: | Oblique aerial view of the Westfield Opencast Coal Mine from the south-south-west, Fife Region. The site covers 1285 acres of which the excavation shown to the north of the Kinglassie-Ballingry road covers 920 acres. The photograph shows the various working benches and the coal haul roadways used by the 35 ton capacity dump trucks to transport the mined coal to the washery complex. The open-pit works commenced in January 1961 and by 1978 21 million tons of coal had been extracted and 100 million cubic yards of excavation works undertaken. |
