Caption: | Dunbar Quarry, the Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Limited limestone quarry at Oxwellmains, East Lothian. |
Description: | The limestone and shale suitable for cement-making occurs in two beds, the Middle Skateraw and Upper Longcraig limestones. The first is under 20 feet of overburden, the second is 72 feet down below a 30 feet thick sandstone and six feet of shale, both have to be extracted and being waste, are used for fill. Glacial overburden is being conveyed across the working face to a tip on the left by means of the large mobile 240 feet long transporter. |
