Description: | Queyhouse Talc Quarry, near east shore of Loch of Cliff, Unst, Shetland. Working face in a talc quarry. Note the colour of fresh and weathered talc. The quarry is situated within the talc belt along the western thrust margin of the Main Serpentinite Block. The quarry has been in operation since 1945 and produces about 9,000 tons per annum. Industrially talc is valued for its softness, smoothness, dry lubricating properties, whiteness, chemical inertness and foliated or lamellar structure. It is used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries although it is also used as a filler and extender in the paint industry. |
