Caption: | Newton Farm, Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway Region. Extracting a Permian core sample from the core barrel at Granton, Moffat. |
Description: | A trial borehole drilled as part of an assessment of the Permian aquifer north of Moffat included the collection of core samples from 20 m., 70 m. and 100 m. depths. Here, the core bit has been unscrewed and the barrel hoisted vertically. The core is then carefully removed, using gentle tapping with a hammer, by collecting it as it falls out. It is then placed, in order, in the wooden core box seen in the foreground. The driller is holding a piece of breccia that is seeing the light of day for the first time in over 230 million years. |
