Description: | The North of Scotland Water Authority were exploring the option of using groundwater for public supply to avoid the cost of upgrading poor quality surface sources. The difficulties of drilling on Skye include access for the rig on soft peaty moorland. Heavy equipment, as shown above, can easily become stuck. Partly to avoid this, the air compressor, which powers the down-hole hammer, had a 100 m. air hose so that, in many cases, it could be left on hard standing whilst the more manoeuvrable rig was driven across soft ground. |
