Caption: Granton, Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway Region. Drilling into the Permian aquifer and river gravels at Granton, Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway Region.
Description: A West of Scotland Water Authority project to assess the groundwater potential of the small Permian aquifer in upper Annandale. The Permian rocks lie in the base of the valley, surrounded by Silurian rocks (forming the hills in the background). This exploratory borehole proved 5 m of coarse river gravel overlying predominantly Permian breccia with some sandstone. The Permian/Silurian boundary was proved at 126 m. below ground level. The aquifer was shown to have good potential for water supply.
