Caption: Cargen borehole site, Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway Region. Permian sandstone core taken from a groundwater abstraction borehole showing cross-bedding.
Description: The fluvial sandstone was deposited in a desert environment within the deep Dumfries basin. The core was taken from a groundwater abstraction borehole which is now the source for the area's public water supply. Permeability in the sandstones is high, but most groundwater flow is via fissures in the rock. However, storage of water in the sandstone is important to provide a sustainable supply to boreholes in the basin.
