Caption: Cargen borehole site, Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway Region. Breccia core from the groundwater abstraction borehole operated by West of Scotland Water.
Description: The Permian rocks of the Dumfries basin comprise two main rock types - breccia and sandstone. The breccia is a matrix-supported rock with a red clayey matrix and mainly Silurian angular clasts. The rock was formed during mud-flow events after periods of heavy rain in a desert environment. The breccia itself is almost impermeable, but where it is interlayered with sandstone units, fissures at the junction allow groundwater to flow. Boreholes intercepting these fissures are normally highly productive.
