Caption: Granton, Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway Region. Close-up of Permian sandstone/breccia core sample from a groundwater exploration borehole at Granton, Moffat.
Description: The core was taken from 50 m. depth and shows evidence of water-lain sandy breccia and fluvial sandstone. The grey clasts are angular fragments of older Silurian rocks that surround the basin. The sandstone/breccia sequence is common in the Permian rocks of the Moffat basin. The borehole was dominated by breccia units and yielded only 2 litres per second, but proved groundwater of very good chemical quality.
