Caption: | Hardthorn Road site, Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway Region. A close-up of the drilling rig used to construct three production boreholes at Hardthorn Road, Dumfries. |
Description: | The levelling rams on the drill rig are clearly seen. These take the weight of the rig during drilling and help to stabilize the equipment so that a vertical borehole can be produced. The power unit under the bonnet also turns the drill bit. Flushing of material from the borehole is provided by a large air compressor which also powers a down-the-hole 300 mm. diameter hammer. The photo was taken during an air-lift test after the borehole was drilled. Compressed air is blown into the borehole which then blows out a mixture of water and air. The orange box on the right collects the discharge water and a V-notch is used to measure water flow. |
