Caption: | The Five Sisters of Kintail with Shiel Bridge in the centre, from above Ratagan. Skye & Lochalsh district. |
Description: | Loch Duich in the foreground. Sgurr an t-Searraich on the opposite shore and the main ridge from left to right, Sgurr nan Saighead, Sgurr Fhuaran and Sgurr na Carnach. At the mouth of the River Shiel are alluvial deposits while the green flat area to the left of the river mouth is an area of raised beach deposits. The Ratagain complex is important in the context of Caledonian magmatism in that it represents a link or transition between characteristics of the 'Newer Granites' and the alkaline contemporaneous magmatism in the North-west Highlands. The foreground is part of the Ratagain plutonic complex while the mountains are composed of Moine psammites and pelites, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. |
