Description: | Lang Craigs, Kilpatrick Hills, 4 km. east of Dumbarton, looking east. Dumbartonshire. Scarp formed by lavas of the lowest group in the Lower Carboniferous Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation lavas. Volcanicity started in the Kilpatrick Hills with the eruption of pyroclastic material from several vents, the Burncrooks Pyroclastic Member is about 80 metres thick; this was followed by the eruption of the Auchineden Lavas, mainly basalts. Rocks of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation occur north of Glasgow in a zone about 6 km. wide running north-east from Dumbarton forming the high ground of the Kilpatrick Hills and the Campsie Fells. |
