| Description: | Eaval in North Uist viewed from near Balaglas, north end of Grimsay, Benbecula. Outer Hebrides. Dip-slope of thrust Lewisian gneiss above Outer Hebrides Thrust Zone. Eaval is noted for the development of pseudotachylite, a dense, black, flinty rock thought to have formed by the brittle fracturing of the gneiss resulting in local melting by frictional sliding and associated with the intense thrusting. Pseudotachylites typically develop in compact, relatively dry high-grade metamorphic rocks especially quartz-gneisses in areas of strong uplift, either during or subsequent to thrusting. |
