Description: | Ropsley Quarry, near the Ropsley - Oasby crossroads on the A52 Grantham - Boston road. Ropsley Quarry, general view. This photograph shows a new additional section (1991) below the old quarry floor (level of the car). The available section now extends from near the base of the Lincolnshire Limestone (c. 2 m. below new floor) to near the top of the formation at the distant quarry rim. A metre-thick fossil-rich wackestone, split into two posts, separates a shale and shaly calcarenite (0.1 m.) at the observer's head from the overlying Ropsley Beds, which are named from this locality. They comprise a metre thickness of pale calcisiltstone beds alternating with shale partings and occur within the Lincoln Member of Ashton (part of the 'Middle' Lincolnshire Limestone, of Ashton, Lower Lincolnshire Limestone of others). The base of the Upper Lincolnshire Limestone is about 2.5 m. above the Ropsley Beds, i.e. at about the top of the intermediate working face in the photograph. |
