Description: | Canna, looking to north-east. Raised beach features backing on to Tertiary basaltic lava scarps. Skye and the Cuillin Complex is in the background. The late-glacial raised beaches formed towards the end of the last glaciation, during a period of great glacio-isostatic depression of the land. The succession of lavas and sparse interbedded fluviatile deposits of the Canna Lava Formation is over 200 m. thick. Submarine basaltic ridges link Canna and Sanday to south-west Skye. |
